Secure OT Infrastructure for the Rheintal Life Sciences Park

GETEC has taken over existing buildings and infrastructure at the Rheintal Life Science Park in Stein. To ensure that the site can continue to operate safely and reliably, the buildings, systems, and central services had to be seamlessly integrated from a technical standpoint. CTE supported GETEC in this effort by establishing a secure OT infrastructure designed for long-term operation.

Novartis has entrusted GETEC with the further development of the Rheintal Life Science Park in Stein, while remaining the largest tenant on site. At GETEC PARK. STEIN, GETEC will be responsible for the operation, maintenance, and management of the infrastructure as well as site services.

One-stop shop for industrial IT

The GETEC project brought together key elements of our industrial IT portfolio:

Operating system architecture, segmentation, virtualization, backup and recovery, remote access, monitoring, lifecycle management, and documentation.

In this way, we are laying the technological groundwork for safe and operational industrial environments.

This involved the task of transitioning existing technical infrastructure into a new operational framework—all within an environment where availability, security, and traceability are key requirements. Such transitions are technically challenging. Existing buildings and systems must be connected, separated from one another, and integrated into a new operational structure. At the same time, the requirements for availability, security, and traceability are increasing. Especially in a regulated life sciences environment, it is not enough to simply network individual systems. What is needed is an infrastructure that is sustainable, documented, and scalable

Building a Secure OT Infrastructure

CTE supported GETEC in this project by establishing this technical foundation. The focus was on connecting the buildings and systems, as well as creating an infrastructure capable of meeting the requirements of future operations. To this end, the project brought together various industrial IT topics:

OT/IT Architecture & Segmentation
Establishment of a clearly structured and securely segregated infrastructure as the foundation for operating various systems and services.
Virtualization & High Availability
Creating a robust platform for stable and fail-safe operation of critical OT-related applications.

Backup and Recovery Strategy
Definition of the technical and organizational foundations necessary to restore systems in a controlled manner and mitigate risks.
Remote Access with Robust Security Measures
Setting up secure remote access capabilities with defined security measures for maintenance, support, and operations.
Monitoring & Lifecycle-
: Establishing the foundations for monitoring the condition of the infrastructure and ensuring predictable and sustainable operations throughout its entire lifecycle.
Documentation & Compliance Support (IEC 62443 and GMP)
Support for creating traceable, regulatory-compliant documentation to serve as the foundation for operations, audits, and further development.

The result: This provided GETEC with a robust OT infrastructure that serves as the foundation for the gradual expansion of additional site and building services.

This laid the groundwork not only for integrating the acquired buildings from a technical standpoint, but also for transitioning them into a professional, scalable, and compliance-oriented operational structure.

In a location like Stein, where high-quality life sciences and manufacturing activities take place, such a foundation is crucial. Where infrastructure, facility management, energy, engineering, maintenance, and other services all come together, a robust OT infrastructure is a key enabler for safe and sustainable operations.
